Since 1974, Cyprus has been divided into the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus — which is only acknowledged by Turkey — and the Republic of Cyprus. This division is particularly clear in the country’s capital, Nicosia, where you can find an official border crossing in the Old Town.
|Nicosia's Old Town is divided into two parts.
Anyone can cross the border and take a trip into what feels like a completely different world. Whilst the south is more western in its style — with churches, museums, shops, and cafés — the northern part has a more eastern vibe. In the north, decrepit, vacant buildings — many of which still have bullet holes in the walls — give you a sense of the Cyprus Crisis that broke out in the mid-1900s.
